Intrinsically safe radios: what "safe around fuel and gas" actually means

Intrinsically safe is a certification, not a marketing phrase. Here is what it guarantees, how hazardous areas are classified, and why the radio has to be matched to your site before anyone carries it in.

An intrinsically safe radio is one certified so that, under normal operation and under specified fault conditions, it cannot release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite a flammable atmosphere. In the United States that certification is issued against UL 913; in Canada against the equivalent CSA standard. It is a property of a specific device, battery and accessory combination, tested and marked as a unit. A rugged radio is not an intrinsically safe radio, and an intrinsically safe radio is only safe in the class of area it was certified for.

How hazardous areas are classified

In North America, hazardous locations are classified by the kind of material present and how often it is present. Class I covers flammable gases and vapors, which is fuel terminals, refineries, chemical plants and natural-gas sites. Class II covers combustible dust: grain elevators, flour and sugar handling, some woodworking and metal-powder operations. Class III covers ignitable fibers. Within each class, Division 1 means the hazard is present under normal operating conditions, and Division 2 means it is present only under abnormal conditions, such as a leak or a spill. Some sites use the international Zone system instead, which draws similar lines with three tiers.

The certification on a radio names the classes, divisions and gas or dust groups it was tested for. A device rated for Class I, Division 2 is not approved for a Division 1 area. That is the detail that matters more than any spec-sheet claim.

What the certification covers, and what it does not

The certified unit is the radio with a specific battery and, where relevant, specific accessories. Swapping in a non-certified battery, or plugging in a headset that was not part of the approval, voids the rating even though the radio itself has not changed. Charging is usually excluded: intrinsically safe radios are charged outside the hazardous area. The certification also says nothing about coverage or audio quality; it is purely about ignition energy.

Where it is actually required

Whether a site needs intrinsically safe radios is a decision the site’s own safety documentation makes, not the radio vendor. The area classification drawing, produced under the electrical code by the site’s engineers, defines which areas are classified and to what division. Anyone carrying a radio into a classified area needs a device rated for it. The usual industries are petroleum and gas, chemicals, grain and feed handling, mining, pharmaceutical manufacturing and some paint and coatings operations. Most construction, logistics and facilities work never enters a classified area and does not need it.

The IR-700UL and how we validate it

Our intrinsically safe radio is the IR-700UL, built to the UL 913 standard in the United States and the equivalent CSA standard in Canada, running on the same managed push-to-talk service as the rest of the range. It is not a general-purpose rugged radio; teams outside a classified area should use the IR-700Y, which is sealed to IP68 and rated for a two-meter drop but carries no hazardous-location certification.

Because the certification is specific, we do not ship the IR-700UL from a spec sheet. Every order starts with your area classification: we confirm the exact device certification against the classes and divisions on your drawing, confirm the SKU and the approved battery and accessories, and document it so your safety officer has the paperwork before the radios arrive. Battery capacity and some dimensions are confirmed at quotation because they depend on the certified configuration.

Questions to ask any supplier

  • Which standard is the device certified to, and by which certification body?

  • Exactly which classes, divisions and groups does the marking cover?

  • Which battery and accessories are part of the approval?

  • Can we see the certificate, not just the brochure?

  • Who checks it against our area classification before delivery?
