What happened to Nextel?

Nextel’s Direct Connect was push-to-talk over a cellular network years before the industry had a name for it. Here is what actually happened to the network, why the idea outlived the technology, and what the modern equivalent looks like.

Nextel was acquired by Sprint in 2005, and the network that made it distinctive, an iDEN system carrying its Direct Connect push-to-talk service, was switched off on June 30, 2013. The brand effectively ended there. What did not end was the reason people bought it: the need for instant, one-button voice across a whole working area, without building a radio system to get it.

What Nextel actually was

Nextel built its business on Direct Connect, the near-instant push-to-talk feature announced by a chirp that anyone who worked on a job site in the 1990s or 2000s will remember. Press a button, talk, release. No dialing, no ringing, no waiting for someone to pick up.

Underneath it was iDEN, a Motorola technology running on 800 MHz specialized mobile radio spectrum. That combination is what made Nextel unusual: it behaved like a two-way radio, but the coverage came from a carrier network rather than from repeaters the customer had to own, license and maintain. For construction, field service, logistics, security and trades, that was a genuinely new proposition.

Why the Sprint merger struggled

Sprint announced the acquisition in December 2004 and closed it in 2005, in a deal reported at roughly 35 billion dollars. The problem was structural: Sprint ran CDMA and Nextel ran iDEN. They were two incompatible networks under one roof, and customers could not simply be moved from one to the other without changing handsets and losing the feature they had bought the service for.

Integration proved harder and slower than expected, subscribers left, and in 2008 Sprint recorded a goodwill impairment of close to 30 billion dollars, an acknowledgment that most of the value in the acquisition was gone.

The shutdown

Sprint retired the iDEN network on June 30, 2013 and pushed customers toward Direct Connect replacements running on its CDMA network. For a lot of businesses the replacement did not feel the same, and many drifted back to conventional two-way radio or to consumer messaging apps that were never designed for the job. Sprint itself merged with T-Mobile in 2020.

Why Nextel was ahead of its time

Strip away the technology and Nextel was selling push-to-talk over a cellular network, the same idea the industry now calls PTToC, roughly fifteen years before LTE made it straightforward. It understood something the market has since confirmed:

  • Frontline teams want one button, not a phone call.

  • Coverage should follow the carrier network, not a tower the customer has to build.

  • Fleets need central administration, users, groups, and devices managed in one place.

  • The radio form factor matters. A device you can operate without looking at it beats a touchscreen in gloves.

What it got wrong was dependency. The whole experience was tied to one proprietary air interface, on one carrier’s spectrum, on handsets built for that network. When the spectrum strategy changed and the technology was retired, there was no migration path that preserved what customers actually valued.

What replaced it

The capability came back, but on open foundations. Push-to-talk over cellular now runs as an application over standard LTE, 5G and Wi-Fi, rather than as a custom network technology. That removes the single point of failure that ended Nextel: the service is not welded to one carrier’s proprietary system, and the devices are either purpose-built rugged radios or rugged Android handsets rather than one vendor’s closed hardware line.

The features have moved on as well. Alongside instant group and private calling, a modern deployment adds web-based dispatch, GPS location and history, geofencing, emergency and lone-worker workflows, remote device control, and message recording, the operational tooling Nextel never had.

Where Integrated Radio fits

Integrated Radio exists for the operation that used to run on Nextel and has never really replaced it. Coverage depends on supported cellular and Wi-Fi availability at your specific sites, so we confirm it against your locations and routes before quoting rather than promising it works everywhere. That is a lesson worth taking from Nextel too.
