Location
Know where the fleet is, and where it has been
Location turns a radio fleet into an operational record. Live position for dispatch decisions, history for reviewing what actually happened.
Short answer
Does push-to-talk include GPS tracking?
Supported radios and devices report GPS position to the dispatch and management environment, giving a live map of the fleet plus location history, geofence alerts and travel-distance information. Availability and accuracy depend on the device, its configuration, and GPS and network conditions, indoor accuracy in particular is not guaranteed.
Location capabilities
What you get with location enabled
Location is part of the managed service rather than a bolt-on, and it is configured per talk group and per device rather than switched on uniformly across the fleet. In practice that means you decide which teams report position and which do not. Three things come out of it. A live map, so a coordinator sends the nearest person instead of calling round. Arrival and departure alerts per site or route, which removes most of the chasing calls. And a history you can look back at when someone queries whether a job was attended, and when. Accuracy depends on the device, its configuration, and GPS and network conditions.
Where it earns its keep
What people actually use location for
Rarely surveillance. Usually deciding who to send, and proving what happened.
Sending the closest worker to an incident
Confirming a guard completed a patrol route
Reviewing an emergency event after the fact
Alerting when a vehicle leaves a site or lane
Verifying arrival and departure at a client property
Understanding how a shift actually ran
Location and safety features depend on device capability, configuration, wireless and GPS availability, and the selected service plan. Indoor GPS accuracy and guaranteed location precision are not implied.
Questions
Location questions
How accurate is the location?
Accuracy depends on the device, GPS conditions and the environment. Open outdoor areas are good; dense urban settings and indoor spaces are less reliable. We do not claim indoor accuracy.
Does location work indoors?
GPS is unreliable indoors. Some deployments supplement it with Wi-Fi context, but you should not rely on precise indoor positioning.
Can we turn location off for some users?
Yes. Location is configured per deployment and can be enabled selectively depending on role and your own policy.
How long is location history kept?
Retention depends on the platform and the selected plan. We will confirm the specific retention period for your deployment during design.
What does location actually give us day to day?
Three things. A live map so a coordinator can send the nearest person instead of calling round. Alerts when someone arrives at or leaves a site, which removes most chasing calls. And a history you can look back at when a customer or a client queries whether someone attended, and when.
Is this tracking staff, and how do we handle that?
It reports device position while the device is on the service, which is a matter for your own policy and any agreements with your team. Location can be configured per talk group and per device rather than applied uniformly. We would encourage you to tell staff plainly what is reported and why, because a fleet people trust gets used properly.
Can we get an alert when a vehicle reaches a site?
Yes. Arrival and departure alerts can be set per site or per route, which is normally what replaces the round of check-in calls. What is available depends on the platform and plan, and we confirm it when we quote.
