IR-series hardware

Rugged radios built for push-to-talk, not for browsing

The IR-series is our range of business two-way radios: screen-free handhelds, radios with a display, rugged units built to be dropped, an intrinsically safe option for hazardous areas, and vehicle-mounted units for fleets. They all run on the same service and the same channels, so a site can mix them freely.

Short answer

What are IR-series radios?

IR-series radios are our own line of business walkie-talkies. They work the way a two-way radio always has, one button and instant voice, but they carry that audio over the cell network rather than a local antenna, which is what gives them range beyond a single site. Every radio ships already set up for your channels, so nothing needs configuring when it arrives.

The line-up

Choose the radio that fits the job

Every model below is supplied, set up and managed by us, and availability is confirmed when we quote. If you are not sure which to pick, the short version is this. Choose a screen-free handheld when the person just needs to talk and the radio changes hands between shifts. Choose one with a display when people work across several channels and need to see which one they are on. Choose the rugged unit when the radio is going to be dropped, soaked or buried. Choose a vehicle unit for anyone who works from a cab, because there is no battery to charge and a hand microphone keeps their hands where they should be. Most fleets end up with two or three models rather than one.

Questions

Questions about choosing a radio

What people ask when they are working out which models go to which teams.

How do I choose between the handhelds?

Start with whether the person needs a screen. If they only need to talk, the IR-65Y is the simplest thing to hand someone and the fastest to train on. If they work across several channels and need to see which one they are on, the IR-60Y adds a small display in the same body. Supervisors who want a color screen and the lightest radio usually take the IR-350. If the radio is going to get dropped, soaked or buried, specify the IR-700Y.

What is the difference between a handheld and a vehicle radio?

A handheld is carried and runs on a battery you charge. A vehicle radio is fitted in the cab, runs off vehicle power so there is nothing to charge, and is used with a hand microphone. Most fleets run both: handhelds for people on foot, an IR-50 or IR-80 in the vehicles.

Do we have to standardize on one model?

No, and most customers do not. The radios all run on the same service and the same channels, so a site can mix screen-free handhelds for crews, a color-screen radio for the supervisor and a vehicle unit in the truck without any of it being a separate system to manage.

Can we change models later?

Yes. Swaps, additions and replacements are handled as part of the managed service, so a model that turns out to be wrong for a role is not a purchase you are stuck with. Hardware is quoted separately from the monthly service, so you can see exactly what a change costs.

What arrives in the box?

The radio, charged and already configured for your channels, plus the charger, battery, belt clip and antenna for handhelds. Vehicle radios come with the mounting bracket, hand microphone and power cable. Nothing needs setting up when it lands.
