For a person who needs to have a private, two-way conversation, look something up or use an app, a phone is the right tool. What a radio does that a phone cannot
One-to-many, instantly. A radio call goes to the whole channel the moment the button is pressed. A phone call goes to one person, after they find the phone, see who is calling and decide to answer. On a site, in a warehouse or across a fleet, the difference is measured in minutes per call, many times a day.
Hands and eyes stay on the work. A radio is operated by feel: a large push-to-talk button, a volume knob, a channel selector. It can be used with gloves, in rain, without looking. It survives. A rugged radio is sealed against dust and water and rated for drops onto concrete. Most phones are not, and the ones that are cost as much as three radios and still need a case.
Everyone hears the same thing. A radio channel is a shared context: the supervisor hears the crew, the crew hears the supervisor, and a call for help is heard by everyone at once. Phone calls are private by design, which is a strength for a conversation and a weakness for coordination.
What a phone does that a radio cannot
Private conversations, at length, with anyone in the world. A phone reaches customers, suppliers and people outside the team, and it carries a nuanced two-way conversation better than a half-duplex channel where one person talks at a time. It runs the work-order app, the navigation, the camera and the email. For a supervisor or a field technician whose job is partly administrative, the phone is essential.
Where the old trade-off came from
The traditional objection to radios was range. A conventional walkie-talkie reaches a few miles in open country and much less inside buildings, and extending it means a licensed repeater on a tower.
