Integrated Radio guide cover: Zello vs. Zello Work, which one should a business use?

Short answer: use Zello Work. Zello describes its free Friends & Family app as a non-commercial consumer product and says using it for business violates its Terms of Service. Zello Work is the paid business version: a private network your admins control, with a management console, unlimited channels and Core or Plus feature sets. Managed Zello is how we deliver Zello Work, with the network setup, device management and a multi-carrier data plan run for you, from $24.95 per user per month.

The free Zello app is for friends and family

Most people meet Zello as the free walkie-talkie app on their phone. It installs in a minute and it works, which is why crews often start using it on their own. The catch is the terms.

In Zello’s own overview of Zello Work, the company says the free Friends & Family app is a non-commercial consumer product and that using it for business violates its Terms of Service.

There are practical gaps too. On the free app, nobody in the business controls who joins, who talks to whom, or what happens to an account when someone leaves. That is fine for a family. It is a problem for a crew where people join and leave every month.

What Zello Work adds

Zello Work is Zello’s subscription push-to-talk service for organizations. According to Zello, every Zello Work plan includes:

  • A private network: you decide who joins and who can talk to whom

  • A web-based Admin Management Console for users, channels and devices

  • Unlimited channels, with no limit on channel membership

  • Apps for Android and iOS, plus Dispatch Hub for Windows and macOS

  • Live location, alerts, and voice, text and image messaging

  • Radio integration through Zello Bridge, so existing two-way radios can join Zello channels

Zello Work is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified, and Zello offers a free 14-day trial network that includes Plus features for up to 100 users.

Core and Plus

Zello sells Zello Work in Core and Plus plans, with custom Enterprise agreements for larger organizations. Core covers essential push-to-talk. Plus adds tools such as transcription and translations, Message Vault recording, Emergency Alerts and AI summaries. The full feature list is on Zello’s pricing page.

What Zello Work does not include

Zello Work is the software and the network service. To put it in the hands of a crew, you still need:

  • Devices: rugged phones or push-to-talk radios that survive the job

  • Data service on every device, ideally across more than one carrier

  • Device management, so radios stay locked to work apps and can be wiped if lost

  • Channel design, user setup and the daily moves, adds and changes

  • Someone to call when a radio stops talking

A business with its own IT team, phones and data plans can buy Zello Work direct and handle that list in house. Plenty do.

Where Managed Zello fits

Integrated Radio is a Zello partner. We are not Zello. Managed Zello is our service built on Zello Work: we set up your Zello Work network, enroll every device in enterprise MDM, supply a multi-carrier SIM and data plan, and handle activations, transfers and deactivations. One provider, one bill.

There is no minimum user count. Hardware is sold separately in our online store, or you can bring compatible devices.

Which one should you choose?

  • Testing push-to-talk with a few people: start a Zello Work trial, not the free app

  • You have IT staff and your own phones and data plans: Zello Work direct can fit well

  • You want radios, data and administration handled by one provider: Managed Zello

  • You already run two-way radios: keep them and connect them to Zello

Not sure which plan your team needs? Managed Zello Core vs Plus sets the two side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business use the free Zello app?

Zello says no. Its support documentation describes the free Friends & Family app as a non-commercial consumer product and says using it for business violates Zello’s Terms of Service. Businesses should use Zello Work.

Is Zello Work the same as Managed Zello?

No. Zello Work is Zello’s business push-to-talk service. Managed Zello is our service built on Zello Work, adding network setup, enterprise device management, a multi-carrier data plan and ongoing administration.

Can we try Zello Work before we commit?

Yes. Zello offers a free 14-day trial network with Plus features for up to 100 users. Our plans have no minimum user count, so you can also start small.

Do Zello radios need an FCC license?

No. Zello push-to-talk runs over cellular data and Wi-Fi, so there is no frequency to license. Conventional business radios are different. Our FCC licensing guide explains which rules apply.

Can our existing two-way radios talk to Zello Work users?

Often, yes, through a radio gateway that bridges selected analog or DMR channels to Zello. Compatibility is confirmed against your specific equipment first. See radio interoperability.
