In the Managed Zello vs Motorola WAVE PTX decision, we recommend Managed Zello for most US business teams buying push-to-talk now. You get Zello Work fully managed by Integrated Radio, full enterprise MDM on every device, and multi-carrier LTE coverage with the SIM and data plan included. WAVE PTX is the stronger pick if you already run MOTOTRBO. Integrated Radio sells Managed Zello, so weigh our opinion with that in mind.

Motorola sells a radio ecosystem
WAVE PTX is a carrier-independent broadband PTT service, and Motorola builds the radios to match. The TLK line covers a wearable (TLK 25), handhelds (TLK 110 and TLK 200), and a vehicle or desktop unit (TLK 150). The MOTOTRBO Ion adds a smart radio that works on both LMR and broadband.
That is the real appeal. A TLK radio feels like a Motorola radio, comes from a Motorola dealer, and links into Motorola’s other products. If that brand and that path already matter to your company, WAVE PTX is a sensible buy.
Managed Zello starts from a different question. We ask who is going to run this system after the radios arrive, because that job lands on someone in most companies. With Managed Zello, it lands on us.
Who does the setup and the admin
Motorola pitches self-service. Its buying guide says you can modify talkgroups remotely and in real time without calling customer service, and updates reach devices over the air. For a team with a radio-savvy admin, that works.
Managed Zello takes the job off your desk. Integrated Radio does channel design and setup, user provisioning and naming standards, roles and permissions, moves, adds and changes, and ongoing administration. Devices arrive charged, labeled and signed in to Zello with your channels.
The comparison gets practical during staff turnover. On a seasonal hospitality crew or a growing guard company, someone has to add, remove and rename people all the time. We think most ops managers would rather send that request than do it.
MDM and lost devices
Every Managed Zello plan includes enterprise MDM. That covers enrollment and policies, app controls and Wi-Fi configuration, a push-to-talk key mapped per device, and remote lock, wipe and locate.
Motorola’s optional SafeGuard package includes a remote user check. It shows battery, signal and location, and it can disable the WAVE PTX app on a lost or stolen device. We did not find full MDM described on the WAVE PTX product pages we checked, so ask your dealer what is available for the radios and phones you plan to use.
Coverage and carrier choice
Motorola lists multi-carrier support on the TLK 200, which connects to the strongest available network at startup and scans for the next one if the link drops. It is a good feature on a good radio. The same callout does not appear for the TLK 110 or TLK 150 in the materials we read, so confirm the carrier setup before you order those.
Managed Zello includes a multi-carrier SIM and data plan on every plan, with activation and management handled for you. FCC data shows 99.6% of Americans live where at least one mobile network offers 4G LTE, but your sites are what count. Every quote starts with a free coverage check, and our guide to what nationwide coverage actually means explains how to read those maps.
Devices and hardware cost
WAVE PTX runs on Motorola’s TLK and Ion hardware or on a phone or tablet you supply. US dealers list the TLK 110 at about $360 to $400.
Managed Zello gives you a wider pick. Our store carries the Inrico T640A, T522A, S380 and TM-7Plus, the Telox TE320 and M3, the Sonim XP5plus and XP Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy XCover7 Pro. Radios start at $199, and you can enroll compatible devices you already own. On rugged smartphones, Managed Zello plus unlimited talk, text and data is $64.95 with Core or $74.95 with Plus.
Dispatch
WAVE PTX Dispatch runs in a browser. Motorola lists one-to-one, group and broadcast calls, talkgroup scanning, call logging and recording, messaging, location history and geofencing. An older Motorola data sheet puts monitoring at up to 20 talkgroups.
Zello Dispatch Hub is a desktop app for PC and Mac, with a shared call queue and dispatch analytics on both plans. Transcription and Emergency Alerts need Plus. Emergency Alerts are not a substitute for 911 or code-required life-safety systems. Dispatch Hub is $19.95 per dispatcher per month, and one US dealer lists WAVE PTX Dispatch at $32.
Connecting your existing radios
This is where Motorola has the clearest edge. WAVE PTX offers wireline connections to MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus, Capacity Max and IP Site Connect, and it uses RoIP for non-MOTOTRBO, analog and conventional digital systems. One dealer lists the MOTOTRBO interoperability add-on at $3 per month.
Zello Work connects to traditional radios through a radio gateway. We scope the gateway hardware per site and quote it separately. Our radio interoperability page shows how that works.
What it actually costs
The monthly numbers are close. A TLK 110 at about $25 to $28 per month sits near Core at $24.95, and the Motorola subscription includes the radio’s data. Motorola itself publishes no price list, so these figures come from dealer sites and can differ by dealer.
The gap shows up in what the fee covers. Our fee includes the admin work and MDM, and hardware can start lower. Also compare the $8 app price with care, because it covers the app on a device you provide, and you still pay for that phone and its service.
When Motorola WAVE PTX might fit better
You run MOTOTRBO and want smartphones or broadband radios tied in through Motorola’s wireline connection.
You want a dedicated radio package with Fall Alert, Lone Worker and an emergency button through SafeGuard.
Your workers cross into Canada or Mexico, since Motorola lists North American roaming on the TLK 200 with SafeGuard.
Your company standardizes on Motorola and has someone in house to run the system.
Our recommendation
For a team that wants push-to-talk running without adding admin work, our recommendation is Managed Zello. Choose Core at $24.95 per user per month if you need live voice, channels, location, texts and photos. Choose Plus at $34.95 if you want AI Digests, Transcription, Translations, Message Vault, breadcrumb history and Emergency Alerts with location. Emergency Alerts do not replace 911 or code-required life-safety systems.

FAQ
Is Motorola WAVE PTX better than Zello?
It depends on what you already own. We think WAVE PTX suits teams already on MOTOTRBO, and Managed Zello suits most teams that want someone else to run the system, including MDM and the data plan.
How much does WAVE PTX cost per month?
Motorola asks you to contact sales for pricing. US dealers list about $25 to $28 per month for a TLK radio on a month-to-month plan, $8 for an app user and $32 for a dispatch user, and these can change.
Does WAVE PTX work with non-Motorola radios?
Yes. Motorola says RoIP can connect WAVE PTX users to non-MOTOTRBO networks, including LMR networks from other vendors.
Can Zello talk to my existing two-way radios?
Yes. Zello Work connects to traditional radios through a radio gateway. Integrated Radio scopes the gateway hardware per site and quotes it separately.
Do I need a separate data plan with Managed Zello?
No. Every Managed Zello plan includes a multi-carrier SIM and data plan, with activation and management. Coverage depends on your sites, so every quote starts with a free coverage check.
